Johnson & Johnson Unit recalls 25 Mcg/Hr Duragesic Patches
On Feb. 11th 2008, J&J recalled 55 lots of 25 mcg/hr CII fentanyl pain patches. There are approximately 500,000 patches per lot so this involves about 27,500,000 fentanyl patches. This is very significant in that the previous recall of 2004 only involved approximately 2.5 million patches. These particular patches are manufactured by Alza Corporation and sold by PriCara and Sandoz, Inc. The particular defect concerns a cut in the edge or seam of the patch that can lead to leaking of the fentanyl gel, thereby overdosing the patient or caregiver. Please be aware that currently the only identifying information we have is that the expiration date will be on or before December 2009. As soon as we are able to ascertain the actual lot #'s involved, we will provide that information. We are committed to continuing our campaign against the manufacturers of these incredibly dangerous devices on behalf of families whom have lost loved ones while properly using these patches. We anticipate that there will be more and more recalls in the future until the manufacturing process is changed and the design of the patch is changed.
