Baycol is a prescription cholesterol-lowering drug that can cause a muscle condition that results in kidney failure. The condition, known as rhabodomyolysis, has led to over 31 deaths.

Baycol is a "statin" drug that lowers cholesterol by blocking certain enzymes in the body. Manufactured by Bayer A.G. Pharmaceuticals, Baycol is indeed effective in lowering cholesterol, however, as evidence that the drug’s dangers outweighed its effectiveness continued to mount, Bayer claimed that patients weren’t taking the right doses, and they continued to say that Baycol was safe.

Marketed heavily since its approval in 1997, Bayer only acknowledged the increased risk of rhabdomyolysis associated with Baycol in May of 2001, and finally recalled Baycol on August 8, 2001 as a result of the deaths linked to its use.
